artistic practice and exploration
Andrea HacklMy practice is interdisciplinary and travels between visual and performative arts.
I produce films, create multidisciplinary performances and explore the medium of installation. I enjoy to collaborate with musicians and artists of other disciplines and in my performative work – also when moving within a set trajectory – cherish the immediacy of improvisation.
I’ve always been drawn to & using both: visual media as well as work with the human body, dance, movement based practices – complemented by drawing, writing and text; using language in a poetic, rhythmical and sensorial way.
On the one side, I embrace the visceral poetry of the body, the body as channel and link of connection, in its presence, interaction and physicality; embedded within or in dialogue with a place, space, an environment or others. The immediacy of our presence and knowing that everything living within us speaks.
On the other side, film, photography and – more spatially / immersive – installation I see as means to expand composition, to create, capture, transmit in an independent time. I love to compose visually and design space and to let any work be/come a sensorial universe.
The medium of film I see as a sensorial / kinetic visual art, at times using poetry or text as soundscape, as a rather textural, rhythmical, poetic than narrative dimension. If I feel it serves the experience of my work, I transform and manipulate the image. I am not seeking to document or reproduce reality – I want to penetrate it, open it up.
Beyond the medium, it’s always, in some way, about piercing reality, connecting with maybe a more essential, more primal layer, pulling something out from the core. That’s my path and exploration.
Performances, installations or films are like journeys we go and invite an audience to come along on to. I believe that on this journey magic can happen – magic that has the power to bring wonder, empowerment, beauty & transformation into our lives.
My work is a celebration of life, embracing the vital power within human beings – this is a very strong experience when working with movement – to manifest, share and, in this way, celebrate a creative core energy.
While the human body remains a main channel of expression within my work, I cherish the alchemy between different disciplines and elements. My desire is to share experiences; a poetic, visceral journey – work that might have the capacity to go and take others beyond rational perception. I believe, through the alchemy of different layers, complimenting, permeating and enriching one another, a dimension beyond the rational is allowed to open up.
Thematically, my work plays around themes of belonging, transformation & empowerment, life cycles, life and death, trance and catharsis and is influenced by stories and mythology as primal and archetypal expressions of life and our psychology. Further, I feel a strong inspiration to work with/in natural landscapes and environments – every place has a meaning and equally carries its energy. It is very special to create work in a dialogue with a place, an environment, connecting with its stories, listening to its presence, voice and whisper, becoming a channel to its essence and life.
