WHAT IS <<VOICE>>?
…..a new MULTIMEDIA PERFORMANCE & INSTALLATION PROJECT with an all female cast & team.
…..a live installation performance by / with women, 3 female dancers & a video as well as sound artist.
…..it’s an exciting collaboration of artists of different disciplines and media:
dance, performance, video, installation, music, sound art, voice / text / poetry
…..a social project in form of thematically related workshops, of which the aim group is women of different age groups and (cultural / national) backgrounds.
some impressions of what happened so far – RESEARCH LABS
…..a celebration of womanhood and the power that we carry inside of ourselves as woman.
….an exploration of the body as psychological landscape, a dialogue with “voices” of our (hi)story that live still within us.
Artistic direction: Andrea Hackl
Dancers: Jill Croivisier (Luxembourg), Andrea Hackl (Austria/Netherlands), 3rd dancer tbc
Sound artist: Veronica Mota (Mexico/Berlin)
A video artist and a dance therapist will join the team.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
THE EMOTIONAL LANDSCAPE OF THE BODY
STARTING QUESTIONS AROUND BODY MEMORY / HISTORY:
What memories do we harbor in our cells?
How can we listen to the voices of our past generations still resonating within our bodies; to the information stored and carried by our cells and the fuids that are circulating within us?
If your body was a voice, how would it sound? What would it say?
How does that voice interact with its surrounding?
Are there many different voices within our bodies? Speaking at the same time?
How are these voices colored not only by your own but the history of your family and possibly the culture that you were born into?
How much is the heartbeat of your mother, your grand mother still resonating within you?
How can we listen to these voices and create a dialogue between our stories?
Can we listen to and pick up the fragments of a story and create a dialogue?
To which extent is my body (not) my own body?
BECAUSE THERE’s A NEED TO SPEAK OF WOMANHOOD AND EXPAND OUR PERSPECTIVE OF WHAT IT MEANS.
BECAUSE THIS WORK BREATHES WITH AND RESPONDS TO THE ZEITGEIST AND WISHES TO CONTRIBUTE TO A DIALOGUE.
Having put out the open call for collaborators for this project, what has been already so amazing is the sincere way in which dancers, and here specifically women, replied. What these women and fellow dancers / makers shared with me so openly, about who they are and their story.
This sincere sharing, is really special and precious. It is touching to read through these emails. Equally, that sincere response showed and, in a way, reassured me that I have to give this my best try to make it work.
It’s interesting to see that many women, female makers are busy with these and similar themes. I assume it is part of the Zeitgeist and, beyond #metoo, a moment to celebrate empowerment and the feminine and womanhood, to expand the meaning of womanhood. It’s an interesting dialogue, as womanhood means something different for every woman.
Maybe embedded and active in these times, as makers, creators and performers, who put either work out there or go on stage, who reach a public, maybe, we have a responsibility or, at least, the wonderful possibility to play an active role in a collective movement and give a voice to the spirit of the time.
I am excited about the possibility to collaborate with a group of amazing, powerful, creative, innovative women who are such special human beings.
HOW DID I PERSONALLY GET INTERESTED IN THE SUGGESTED THEMES?
#1 _ BODY MEMORY
Body memory, its emotional landscape and memories that possibly live within different spaces of our body; how past stories or even the hi/story of our previous generations might still live within us, inhabit us started to interest me when
….on the one side:
….when exploring “fear” and the way in which it can inhabit or can express itself through different spaces / parts of our body; looking into how, in those different spaces, fear might move differently.
Where does an emotion / memory sit and how does it (make us) move? ……contracting, grabbing, holding, expanding, rippling, imploding, thrusting, jerking, shaking, laughing, widening, tensing……
….on the other side
….having a health condition which, as far as I know, also my parents have and, possibly, generations before that had. in the very moment I realized this, it felt as if my body wasn’t entirely my own, impacted, inhabited by some imprint from before.
#2 _ WOMANHOOD:
Since about a year, I’ve been feeling the desire to create a work about / with / by women. To celebrate womanhood, the feminine, the creative power within us, the ocean within us. – this desire rose when, in fact, sitting in front of the sea. I felt the deep wish to work with the theme of womanhood and with fellow, female artists.
WHAT DOES WOMANHOOD MEAN FOR YOU?
The project will include and bring together artists from different disciplines and media.
The project and performance <<Voice>> will include a video installation as integral part of the show and, equally, independent installation representing, on the one side, a portrait of women and, on the other side, the body as a landscape of our / their (hi)story – working with visual / sound footage recorded in frame of workshop as well as personal, 1-on-1 meetings.
An interest lays on using this material to travel between, on the side, a more narrative quality and, on the other side, the (potentially) distorted, the sensorial / emotional, what cannot be clearly read or articulated.
Parallel to / in continuation of the production of the live / installation performance, the plan is to create a dance flm.
SOCIAL OUTREACH PROGRAM
In frame of this project a social / community outreach program is planned, in form of workshops for women of diverse age groups, (cultural) backgrounds and nationalities.
Material and results of these workshops – interviews, video / audio recordings – will fow into the performance project and the related installation.
WITH YOUR HELP AND CONTRIBUTION WE CAN MAKE THIS PROJECT HAPPEN
We are a group of independent artists coming together to go on this journey and to create this work. I feel more then honoured and excited to have the opportunity to work with a team of such amazing individuals. Beyond the project being inspiring in itself, I sincerely believe that artists deserve to get paid for their work, the involvement and investment – of their time and energy, to say the least.
In fact, in a process as such much more then time and energy goes into it…. it is all of who we are, our creativity, our feelings, our emotions, all that we know, our soul really.
If this project seems interesting to you and you have the possibility, please, support us financially.
